Das Romantische Amerika

Hoppé had been visiting New York and photographing America since 1919. By 1921 he had set up a studio in New York and was regularly making portraits of celebrated Americans, but he spent most of his time photographing New York City. Inspired by its brave new architecture that imposed an unprecedented scale, angularity, and light on an urban environment, Hoppé responded by making views that embraced the new geometric form. As he proceeded across the country to record its major sights, the same Modernist vision informed his approach to photographing America’s Midwest and Western spaces.
