Picturesque Great Britain:
The Architecture and the Landscape

(British edition)

EnglandOne of the most beautiful photographic presentations of Britain, these two volumes, identical for their 300 gravure-plate photographs, chronicle topographical views of the British Isles. Each has their introductory text translated to the language of their respective markets. The term “Picturesque,” as used in the title of this book, seems old fashioned today, but in 1926 such description invited the audience to see artistic views of urban and country landscape. Hoppé’s picture-making is what we now know as “Modernist.” Some of the characterizing aspects of this approach are found in the visualization of his subject both as subject matter, that is, what the picture is of, and as the two-dimensional geometric composition of its form intended as an abstraction of shapes.
